Definitely freehand. But, you make a blade holder out of wood,a bolt and wingnut;ends up looking like the swivel arm Cumpiano shows for clamping and cutting the curved abalone. Once you have a handle on it, it will get razor sharp-HOCK STEEL!MT(I've been practicing with mine on scrap)
